Insanity

If you thought that Joe Biden winning the election was somehow going to make everything OK -or at least better- after four years of Trump, I admire your optimism. And although I hate to be a wet blanket or Debbie Downer, I'd like to call your attention to the fact that we still have the same exact two-party chokehold strangling this nation. It has and will always be Democrats vs. Republicans until we the people decide to do something about that. I hold out little hope of that though since the majority of us seem to love being part of a team. Trump was a prime example of how party comes before people. Party is apparently everything. To hell with morals, common sense, the greater good -all that stuff is meaningless when it comes to pumping up and supporting your party. Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, you're after the same goal. Party above all else. We're seeing that play out now in grand fashion as we approach yet another ominous Government shutdown on December 11th if a continuing budget is not agreed upon. We also have millions of Americans losing their houses, their jobs, and their families because the Democrats and Republicans can't agree on a second pandemic relief plan. Both sides are dug in, towing their respective party line, unwilling to compromise. All the while our Commander in Tweets continues to claim he won the election while chasing a little white ball around his golf course. He certainly isn't willing or able to do anything to actually help the country at this point; he's too busy calculating his next moves in court. And while we hear both the Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress say how desperately concerned they are for the American people, their actions -or rather inaction- speaks louder than any words coming out of their mouths. And we the people just sit back and watch as both sides throw up their hands and blame the other party for the impasse. These 'leaders' in Congress and the Senate are obviously incapable of leading, of compromising, of doing what needs to be done. And yet they all continue to collect their big fat paychecks and enjoy some of the best health care money can buy. None of them are wondering where their next meal is coming from. None of them are worried about their next paycheck. None of them are wondering if and when their power or water will be cut off or when their mortgage company will start foreclosure proceedings against their house. No, they don't have to worry about any of that stuff. The only thing they are concerned about is towing their party line and blaming the other party for all the problems going on in the country. Why not? It's worked for a hundred years or so. They never get punished for their incompetence and greed. Hell no! They get RE-ELECTED time after time after time.

I'll close with my reciting my favorite definition when it comes to politics and this two-party chokehold. The word is INSANITY and the definition goes something like this: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. Welcome to the United States of Insanity brought to by the Republican and Democratic parties. Enjoy.

The End

I've been thinking a lot about the end. My end. I'm currently over in Sweden with my wife. The purpose of this visit was supposed to be to celebrate 20 years of marital bliss and see some of her family. A chance to take it easy for a while. That was the purpose until my wife's stepmother, Monica, suddenly passed away at the beginning of August. We had already purchased our plane tickets for the end of September and it would've been expensive to try to change the flights. Plus, I couldn't take off of work any earlier than we had already planned for. So, with my wife's halfsister's help, we arranged to have Monica cremated and then planned for the funeral to take place when we got to Sweden.  Monica had no children, but my wife considers her more of a mom than her biological mom. Monica had cancer and we all knew she would never be cured of it, but she had been responding very well to treatments and we were both looking forward to spending some quality time w

Observations from the Front Lines

Observations from the front lines of the COVID-19 Pandemic. We're all on the front lines. We're all in this together. Granted some are in much worse situations than others. Everyone in my family still has a job to go to except for my 15-year-old daughter. She worked at a shirt and souvenir shop in Annapolis that has decided to close for the next couple of weeks. Months? The husband-wife owners of the shop are still trying to plot their way forward. The wife had another full-time job that she was just laid off from because of this pandemic. Like a one-two punch combination, now she and her husband are forced to close their shop and their only other source of income. They have two small kids and they're certainly not financially well off, by any stretch of the imagination. My wife's side gig as a professional face painter has, of course, come to a screeching halt. We were just coming into the busy season for face painting. The days leading up to and including St. Patrick

You'd think we would've figured this out by now.

If it's one thing humans are incredibly good at, it's killing their fellow human beings. We don't need much of a reason most times and there's certainly not much forethought, logic, or reasoning involved before we start firing bullets and missiles, dropping bombs, and deploying deadly drones. Whether it's a lone gunman pissed off at someone or something or an entire nation pissed off at another nation or group of people; rest assured, heads will roll and bodies will drop. And when it's all said and done and there are dead and wounded everywhere, absolutely nothing will be resolved. In fact, it will only lead to more anger, misunderstanding, kneejerk reactions and, yes, more killing. Our history books are full of these accounts of man killing man whether it's revenge, holy war, or self-preservation. You'd think after seeing these killings repeated century after century after century for the same old weak and tired reasons, we'd be able to learn to st
